Water filter cartridges are the single most important element in any water filter system. Essentially, these devices are the ones removing dangerous contaminants from your water source, so it’s important to choose the right water filter cartridges for your system and ensure their timely replacement and maintenance.

Sediment-Water Filter Cartridges

Sediments are small particles like rust, sand grains, and clay that either occur naturally in your water source or that water picks up as it travels through water pipes. These sediments may be small enough to not be visible to the naked eye, but even so, with time, these suspended solids may interfere with the performance of your kitchen. Sediment filters have to be replaced frequently and regularly, especially after long non-usage. Sometimes, sediment filters are used as post-filters in water treatment systems that create sediments especially in alkaline water filter cartridges. One example would be scale control systems that create scale crystals, which need to be removed from the water.

Ceramic Filters

These are very effective in trapping the tiniest of bacteria; they also discharge positively, charged metal ions when coming into contact with water, thanks to the silver lining incorporated in them. These positive ions destroy any bacteria which may gather on the outside of the element. It is a good idea to wash the outside of the ceramic filter every now and then.

Activated Carbon Water Filter Cartridges

Carbon is probably the most ubiquitous filter media in the water filter industry, thanks to its high surface area and contaminant adsorption capacity. Unlike sediment filters, carbon filters can be used to remove chlorine, volatile organic compounds, THMs, pesticides, herbicides, and some types of microorganisms.

Carbon is ground into small particulate sizes either to create carbon block filters or granular activated carbon (GAC) filters. Carbon blocks contain solid blocks of compressed carbon, while granular activated carbon filters contain loose granules of carbon.

Depth Filter Cartridges

Depth filters are commonly seen as a cut string, spun, or melt-blown cartridges that trap particles of larger size on the surface, and smaller particles under the surface down to the center core. They work best when a variety of particle sizes are being filtered. Depth filters remove more sediment and hold more sediment in general, without losing pressure, than a surface filter cartridge.

UV Filters

These types of filters are possibly one of the newest technologies on the market. When ultraviolet radiation is used to treat water, it has the ability to destroy diverse bacteria that can be damaging to your health. If you want a more environmental-friendly way of purifying your water, the alkaline water filter will be the better because it doesn’t need any chemicals or additional heat to be effective.

Alkaline/Water Ionizers

The filters in alkaline water pitcher prdoucts or other similar water ionizers use a process known as electrolysis. The water is passed over a barrier, which is electrically charged, and it’s separated into two streams. One is alkaline and the other is acidic. Not only do you get softer water as a result, water that’s low in acidity is much better for your skin as well.

Atmospheric Water Generators

The atmospheric water system requires no water furnishing, as it processes moisture from the air; after this moisture process takes place, various methods of filtering produce good, drinkable water.

Reverse Osmosis Filters

Reverse Osmosis uses porous filters to remove all salts and most bacteria. It also removes all minerals, so it is not advisable to drink the water it produces. This water is good to clean, as it leaves skin enhanced and hair shiny and flowing. It is also good for laundry, as it is very efficient in removing stains.
